Location of Intern Site: SMU Sports Information Office
Major Responsibilities: Writing recaps of home games for SMU sports and writing feature stories on coaches and athletes.
How did I find out about this internship?: I found out about this internship through Emily Loof, who had the internship last year, and Dean Beckman, the head of the Communications department at SMU.
Favorite part of the internship?: Interviewing coaches and athletes and writing stories about them.
Most challenging part?: Writing creatively so that people enjoy reading the recaps and stories. I need to make sure the recaps are interesting enough to grab people’s attention.
Biggest lesson learned at internship?: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and get advice. My supervisor is very helpful and always willing to suggest ways to improve my skills.
Advice of others considering an internship: Having an internship is great if you don’t know exactly what you want to do and want some experience in a field. They provide you with good experience to help you know if it’s something you’d like to pursue.
Anything else you’d like to add: Be flexible and open to any opportunities so you can learn as much as possible during an internship.
