Name: Hailey Nisbit
Major: Sports Management & Marketing
Class of: 2020
Location of intern site: Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC), Rochester, MN
Major Responsibilities: publishing news releases to Facebook and Twitter, sending emails to the school Athletic Directors, using social media to promote the MCAC – creating an Instagram page, interviewing athletes and creating a story based on the interview.
How did I find out about this internship?: I found out about this internship by talking to Dr. McCallum-Ferguson. I asked her if she knew of any internships that I could do for this semester and if it was possible, I would prefer to do something with athletics.
Favorite part of the internship? My favorite part of the internship so far has been able to completely write up my own piece on an athlete from Minnesota West Community and Technical College.
Most challenging part?: The most challenging part of my internship so far has been trying to come up with multiple ways to say the same thing throughout a piece to either keep the reader interested to keep reading or to catch their attention.
Biggest lesson learned at internship: My biggest lesson so far with this internship has been to be aware of my time management. With this, I have deadlines that I need to make sure I’m keeping in mind when I am working on a piece that needs to be published.
Advice for others considering an internship: My advice for other students preparing for an internship would be to be ready to take on a lot more commitment and responsibilities, especially if you’re a student-athlete and/or also working during the same time. It’s a lot to take on, but just be aware of your time management.
Anything else: I’m really excited to continue working with Pete Watkins and the MCAC. Being able to have this opportunity is great and will help me immensely in the future as I finish my degree and look for a future career in the athletic field.
